GLASGOW — Chris Crain knows there comes a time when someone has to make a shot.
The Lady Scotties struggled to find that someone Saturday night, as 28 percent shooting and relentless defensive pressure from Greenwood led to a 41-32 loss.
“You’ve got to credit Greenwood. They came in and pressured the ball and we expected that,” Crain said. “We just didn’t take advantage of the opportunities we did have.”
The Lady Scotties did take advantage of those opportunities early.
Six points from Haley Perkins coupled with a Shelby Ray three-pointer helped Glasgow build a 9-4 lead just past the midway point of the first quarter. Glasgow’s first-quarter offense would virtually stop there. Greenwood went on to outscore the Lady Scotties 11-1 in the final minutes of the period thanks to a full court trap that forced several Glasgow turnovers.
Both teams struggled at the onset of the second, with the first points of the period coming courtesy of Kelsey Greer at the 5:25 mark. Greenwood and Glasgow combined for only nine second quarter points to close the half with an 18-16 Greenwood advantage.
“At halftime, I told the girls we had to do two things: recognize and react,” Crain said. “We’re still a young team. We’ve got to learn if Kelsey (Greer) is double-teamed then somebody’s gotta be open.”
The girls took the advice to heart in the first minute of the third. Scores from Perkins and Ray gave Glasgow a 20-18 lead.
Glasgow would never lead again, however, allowing Greenwood to pull away in the fourth to secure the win.
Perkins led the Lady Scotties with 16 points, while Ray posted nine and Greer five.
Glasgow will have little time to recover when the team turns around to face Russell County tonight.
“That’s not a whole lot of time to bounce back,” Crain said. “One more practice, and we’ll be right back on the floor.”
The Greenwood loss snapped a six-game winning streak for the Lady Scotties.
“I think (Greenwood) played smarter (on Saturday),” Crain said. “It was a grind, it was ugly and we knew whoever had the ball at the end was going to end up winning. But there just comes a time near mid-season when someone has to start making shots.”
