A treat available for your pets

GLASGOW — Don’t expect to buy a poinsettia this holiday season from Barren County 4-Hers. They’re not selling them.

This is the first time in 25 years that 4-Hers haven’t sold the flowers. Instead, they are selling 100 percent human grade pet treats.

Last year, 4-Hers sold poinsettias and the animal treats, but a decision was made to only sell the animal treats this year.

“There is a need for pet treats and the fact that so many people want to give something to their pets for Christmas,” said Paula Tarry, Barren County Extension Agent for 4-H and Youth Development.

The treats are for dogs, cats and horses. They come in a variety of flavors.

Proceeds from the sale of the animal treats will go to assist local 4-H members with various awards, scholarships and programs.

“When we sold them last year, we just did them where we had them here in the office,” she said. “They really went pretty well.”

Veterinary Dr. Michael Doyle purchased several bags of the treats and donated them to the Barren River Animal Welfare Association.

“Well, a young lady was in selling the treats, so I thought we could get a two for one. Buy some of the treats and donate to BRAWA and help two worthy causes at once,” Doyle said, adding he may donate more animal treats again this year.

Margie Patton, chairperson of BRAWA’s board of directors, said Doyle’s donation was greatly appreciated, as well as any other donation.

“Everything that is donated to us offsets money that we don’t have to use from our operating budget, so donations are crucial to help us get through the year,” she said.

The Triple G 4-H Club is producing a video about giving some of the horse treats to horses that have been rescued.

“They are trying to locate some of the horses at this time that they would like to give the pet treats to,” Tarry said.
