Mutter, Steenbergen elected to Southern States local board

GLASGOW — Joe Mutter, of Glasgow, and Garry Steenbergen, of Cave City, were elected to the local board at the Southern States annual membership meeting in Glasgow on Aug. 20. More than 500 stockholder-members and their families attended.

Wade Barton, Glasgow, was elected chairman/president of the local board, while Douglas Furlong, Park City, was named vice chairman/vice president.

Elected to the Southern States Farm Home Advisory Committee were Kari Button, Lessa Houchen and Cynthia Rowland, all of Glasgow.

Button was chosen chairman of the committee, and Houchen was named secretary.

The meeting also included a report by Brad Gilkey, of McDaniels, Southern States’ district manager, on major developments at the cooperative during the past year.

Reviewing local operations and services was Billy Beckham, manager. He reported that total operating volume for the past year was about $14.2 million.

This session also included a special recognition ceremony for newly elected and retiring board members and Farm Home Advisory Committee members. Those retiring include Kari Button and Lessa Houchen.

Other highlights of the meeting included special guests from Southern States Cooperative Inc., Richmond, Va., attending Tom Scribner, CEO; Leslie Newton, chief financial officer and vice president; Jobie Miller, vice president of operations, Southern States Corporate board member; and Eddie Melton, Richmond Board.

Founded in 1923, Southern States now has more than 300,000 farmer-members. As one of the nation’s largest agricultural cooperative, the Richmond, Va., based firm provides a wide range of farm inputs, including fertilizer, seed, livestock feed and pet food, animal health supplies and petroleum products, as well as other items for the farm and home. The cooperative serves its members and non-member customers through 1,100 retail outlets and had sales just under $2 billion in its fiscal year ended June 30.
