State officials named outstanding WKU ag alumni

GLASGOW — Three area state representatives were recently recognized during the annual Western Kentucky University Agriculture Alumni Luncheon.

Rep. James R. Comer (R-Tompkinsville), Sen. David Givens (R-Greensburg) and Rep. Wilson Stone (D-Scottsville) were recently recognized at the luncheon for being named Outstanding Agriculture Alumni for the Year.

“We all three graduated from Western and majored in Ag,” said Comer.

The luncheon was during Western’s week of homecoming activities.

“It was a pretty nice little thing. I appreciated it,” he said. “I wasn’t expecting it, but I really appreciated it. I’ve always had a love for agriculture and enjoyed going to Western and majoring in agriculture.

“I made a lot of lifelong friends there and remain close to a couple of instructors there. It’s an honor to be recognized.”

Each legislator also serves on the Kentucky General Assembly Interim Agriculture Committee and plays a major role in agriculture in Frankfort, according to a university press release.

Givens chairs the Senate Agriculture Committee.

“It is an honor to be chosen by WKU as ag person of the year,” Givens said.

Stone chairs the House Tobacco Task Force and Comer is the ranking House Republican on the Tobacco Settlement Agreement Fund Committee which oversees the state’s Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement money.
