Agricultural investment grant funds available

GLASGOW — Barren County has received $325,000 in agricultural development funds for a County Agricultural Investment Program.

The money can be used by producers to make farm improvements or for agriculture investments.

“You can buy equipment, build hay barns or do fencing. It’s just about unlimited. If it deals with agriculture, you can about do it,” said Glenn Barrick, chairman of the Barren County Conservation District’s board of directors.

CAIP covers a wide variety of agricultural enterprises in 11 investment areas, including commercial production of aquaculture; bees and honey; equine; forage; fruit; livestock; mushrooms; ornamental horticulture; poultry; rabbits; timber; and vegetables, as well as agritourism business development; commercial kitchen construction or conversion; energy efficiency/production; and on-farm water enhancement, according to a press release from the Governor’s Office of Agricultural Policy.

Producers must submit applications for the funding. Applications will be taken at the local conservation office beginning Feb. 14 and continuing through Feb. 28.

Barren County was approved for the funding at the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board’s November 2010 business meeting. The Barren County Conservation District Board submitted a proposal to the Barren County Agricultural Development Council and the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board to provide cost-share incentives to area farmers.

“I am committed to creating opportunities that will make Kentucky’s agricultural community stronger,” said Gov. Steve Beshear in the press release. “County Agricultural Investment Programs funded by the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board play an integral role in achieving this goal.”

Sen. David Givens, of Greensburg, said the money will assist Barren County farm families in diversifying and modernizing their farm operations.

Rep. Johnny Bell, of Glasgow, said he appreciates the conservation district’s commitment to helping farm families diversifying and expanding  their farming operations.

“The Ag. Development fund has had and continues to be a great benefit to Barren County,” he said in the press release.
