BOWLING GREEN — Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green is under lockdown after a report of shots being fired near Pearce Ford Tower on the main campus.
Students recieved text messages saying they should be on the alert and seek shelter.
Student Devin Bell said he wasn’t really sure what was going on, all he knew was the campus was on lockdown.
“The police and SWAT team are here, though, so they’re taking care of it.”
Elissa Belak was across the street from the campus.
“I know they’re on lockdown,” she said. “I saw some helicopters go over and we can see cop cars, but we don’t really know anything right now.”
Officials at WKU say they've sent text messages warning students to seek shelter after reports of shots fired on campus. The on-campus voice alarm was also used to alert employees and students of the situation.
There were no confirmed reports of shots fired, according to police.
Classes have been cancelled for this day. No decisions have been made for tomorrow.
University spokesman Bob Skipper says at least one building on the university's south campus has been evacuated after someone reported seeing gunmen. University lawyer Deborah Wilkins says there are no injuries reported. Police found no indication of gunmen on the south campus, nor the main campus, according to WBKO television.
South campus is home to Bowling Green Community College.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
