Murray, Travis sentenced
BOWLING GREEN — Two former Glasgow Police Department majors were sentenced to time served today in U.S. District Court in Bowling Green.
Johnny Travis, 41, and Maxie Murray, 46, both of Glasgow, will still have to complete two years of supervised release. They each had to pay a total of $1,125 in fines and special assessments as well.
The sentencing agreement was reached between the lawyers for Travis, Alan Simpson, and Murray, Steve Romines, along with Assistant U.S. District Attorney David Weiser. Murray and Travis were each charged with conspiracy to possess hydrocodone without a valid prescription and to corruptly persuading a person with the intent to hinder, delay or prevent the communication to law enforcement officers relating to the commission of a federal offense.
Prior to being released on bond, Murray and Travis spent 36 days incarcerated. They were initially arrested on Feb. 4. They have been on bond since March 11.
It was a full courtroom for Travis’ sentencing hearing with family and members of his church filling all the seats and standing in the back of the courtroom. During the hearing he apologized to both his family and church for what he had put them through.
“My wife said it best. I’ve drug her and my children through hell with me,” Travis said. “If I could do something to take this back I would, but I can’t.”
“You’re lucky to have this much support,” said U.S. District Judge Thomas Russell. “I could do most of my sentencings in a much smaller courtroom.”
Murray declined to make a comment during the hearing. But after the hearing Romines said his client was glad to be able to put this situation behind them.
