GLASGOW —
For the second year in a row, Glasgow-Barren County has been recognized as one of the nation’s 100 best communities for young people.
In Washington, D.C., on Wednesday morning, America’s Promise Alliance and ING Foundation officially announced the 100 winning communities.
“We are proud of Barren County for being named one of the America’s Promise Alliance’s 100 Best,” said Marcus Kingrey, director of community education for Barren County Schools and member of Barren County’s Promise. “This award recognizes the hard work of many community members who have dedicated their time to making a difference in the lives of our young people.”
Barren County has an 81.9 percent graduation rate and has a number of initiatives that ensure students are healthy and successful, according to information provided by Kingrey.
The community is also working to recover students who have dropped out of high school through enrollment in Glasgow Independent Schools’ Success Academy. The academy works with local employers to help students who need to earn an income to stay in school with smaller, more conveniently scheduled classes, according to the press release.
Bob Reece, past director of the Success Academy, is in Washington to receive a special award in conjunction with the community recognition, Kingrey said.
