GLASGOW —
Barren County has been named one of the best places in the country for supporting the educational goals of its young people.
America’s Promise Alliance and ING, a global financial services company, announced its list of 100 Best Communities for Young People including Barren County during a press conference Tuesday morning on the National Mall near the Washington Monument in the nation’s capitol.
The 100 Best list recognizes extraordinary community-wide efforts to improve the well-being of students through programs that help keep children in school and prepare them for college and the 21st century workforce, according to a press release from Marcus Kingrey, community education director with Barren County Schools.
Marilyn Sink, representing Barren-Hart-Metcalfe County Kentucky ASAP Drug-Free Communities Coalition, attended the ceremony in Washington and said Tuesday morning that Barren County was chosen as one of the recipients because of its strong local programs supporting the youth of the community including the Leaders of the Future program through the Glasgow-Barren County Chamber of Commerce, Community Medical Care and partnering with other coalitions in the community such as KY ASAP and Barren County Safe Kids.
“This is a good community for youth to grow up in,” Sink said.
Celebrities including “Twilight” star Kellan Lutz and dignitaries Alma Powell, chair of America’s Promise Alliance; Marguerite Kondracke, president and CEO of America’s Promise Alliance; Rhonda Mims, president of the ING Foundation and senior vice president of ING’s Office of Corporate Responsibility and Multicultural Affairs; and select members of Congress were on hand when the 100 Best Communities for Young People were revealed during a ceremony at 9:30 a.m. central time in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday. Community representatives, students and members from some of the Alliance’s more than 450 national partner organizations were also in attendance.
Sink was scheduled to meet with U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell and U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie Tuesday afternoon following the ceremony.
