THE BIZ: Cox’s business grows despite country location

GLASGOW — For Mike Cox, leading a good business is all about the people he leads.

As the owner of Haywood Sales & Service, Cox relies on customers who are willing to travel out into Barren County to get to the shop on Finney Road. He gets those customers not because they know him, but because the customers know Wayne Mesker, Jerry Reece and Larry Mesker, the men who work on the vehicles, mowers and small equipment for the shop.

“It wasn’t really me, I was smart enough to put good guys around me,” Cox said.

Cox wasn’t in the mechanical business at first, but he gave up his dairy business five years ago after a health problem made life dangerous for him to keep up the fast pace of the dairy life.

The comment of his 3-year-old granddaughter was what made him pack up his barns.

“She just said ‘I love these cows, but I’d rather have you around,’ and that’s when I decided to get out,” Cox said.

When he was out of the dairy business, former owner Walter Mansfield called Cox asking him to come work for him.
