GLASGOW — The work of Glasgow artist Steve Clay is now on display at the Glasgow-Barren County Chamber of Commerce.
Clay has been experimenting with his art off and on for several years.
“I have been drawing longer than painting,” he said. “I have been drawing off and on since high school and painting for about two years.”
The exhibit features drawings, some done with colored pencil and others with graphite, as well as watercolor paintings.
“I am more comfortable with graphite, but I like watercolor also,” he said.
His subject matter varies from logs covered with moss and leaves to vintage vehicles and their parts, such as headlights, grills and license plates.
“I do not really have a favorite subject, but I do like anything with rust on it,” he said.
Clay entered his work in the 2009 Kentucky State Fair and received three awards. His graphite drawing entitled “Twisted,” won second place, while his transparent watercolor painting of an aging and neglected car earned first place. Another watercolor painting, “Barn at Hays,” was given top honors of the Whip Mix Corporate Purchase Award also at the state fair, according to a press release from the Glasgow-Barren County Chamber of Commerce.
Clay has exhibited his work at the public library in Scottsville, the Allen County Extension Office, the South Central Kentucky Cultural Center and at various art shows in Bowling Green.
He draws and paints because he enjoys it, he said, and feels like he needs to do it.
“I do not know where [my art] will take me, I just try to get better,” he said. “If you keep getting better it will take you where you need to be.”
