The effect the closing of Kentucky Repertory Theatre will have on Horse Cave is not fully known, but some can’t see the outcome being positive.
The theater’s board of directors made the decision in February to close the theater due to financial problems.
“Anytime you lose anything in a small community, it has to have impact,” said Mayor Randall Curry. “The worst thing that has really bothered me was not being able to expose children in rural Kentucky to the arts. That part is going to be taken away.”
Kentucky Rep offered acting classes through its Young Performers program and attracted youths from several counties in the region.
Several youths who participated in the theater’s education program have gone on to pursue acting careers.
Ken Hailey, who was working as producing artistic consultant for the theater when it closed, thinks the theater’s closing will have a negative impact.
“It’s sad to say that it’s not boding well for the survival of the town itself,” he said. “That town has got to reinvent itself in order to survive.”
Dave Foster, director of the American Cave Museum, said news of the theater’s closing was upsetting and he didn’t wish to comment on what effect it may have on the museum or the town.
Horse Cave is one of five Kentucky towns that have achieved cultural district status. A cultural district is a community that features a high concentration of cultural amenities; joining the cities of Berea, Covington, Danville and Paducah in obtaining the status, according to the Kentucky Arts Council website.
