Annual event returns
GLASGOW — Celtic music is unique. There’s no doubt about that. Sometimes it’s an easy-listening ballad played on a guitar or a harp, while at other times it’s a rocking tune created by mixing the sounds of a bagpipe, a flute, a Bodhran drum, a fiddle and an electric guitar.
Both styles can be witnessed this weekend at the annual Glasgow Highland Games at Barren River Lake State Park.
The festival gets under way tonight with the Celtic Rock Concert at 8 p.m. beneath a tent adjacent to the Louie B. Nunn Lodge featuring Seven Nations and Needfire.
“It’s going to be a fantastic rock concert,” said Bob Harrison, president of the Glasgow Highland Games. “This is the first time the two of them are going to be playing together. We are very, very fortunate to get both of them.”
Events continue Friday with the City of Glasgow Ceilidh, a Scottish folk festival and concert, at 7 p.m. also beneath the tent adjacent to the lodge.
The Ceilidh will feature performances by all musical groups set to perform at the games, plus a raising of the clans.
The raising of the clans involves representatives of all the clans at the games to march through the tent carrying torches. It is set to begin at 7:15 p.m. followed by the Ceilidh at 7:30 p.m.
“That should be a big start for the Ceilidh,” Harrison said. “We’ve never done this before. It goes back deep, deep into tradition.”
All performers are also scheduled to perform throughout the day Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. beneath the picnic pavilions on St. Andrews and Strathbarren fields at the state park.
One of the acts scheduled to perform at various times is the Grimes Sisters.
“They were nominated for a Grammy this year,” Harrison said. “They were here last year. We were the first Games that had them. They are great. They will be a very high national act within the next year or two.”
Also performing at the festival will be the Red River Fiddlers, Colin Grant Adams, Alex Beaton and Skip Clevenger.
At the Tartan Ball on Saturday night the Archers, of Lexington, are set to perform.
“Because of the economy we’ve lowered the price from $75 per couple to $45 per couple,” Harrison said.
The Tartan Ball is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.
Also taking place Saturday at 8 p.m. is the Rockin’ Under the Stars concert featuring Father, Son and Friends and NeedFire.
The massed band performance set for noon Saturday will feature more than 500 bagpipers and drummers.
“The entertainment this year is certainly the best we’ve had since the International Games in 2001,” Harrison said. “Whether you are 10 years old or 80 years old there is going to be an entertainer you’re really going to love to hear.”
Tickets for all of the events can be purchased at the Glasgow Highland Games office on East Main Street just off the public square or at the gate the day or night of the performance.
