‘Beauty and the Beast’ premieres

GLASGOW — Ninety-two Barren County High School and elementary students are involved in the school’s production of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” their largest cast yet.

“It’s been a much bigger production than anything we’ve done before,” said BCHS junior Bailey Birge, who plays the role of Belle. “It’s more props, costumes and color.”

The drama club’s production was made possible by Barren Beyond the Bell, a 21st Century grant for after-school programs. Christy Austin, Barren Beyond the Bell site coordinator, said the after-school program gives students a chance to explore their interests with a wide array of classes offered.

BCHS senior Matt Zuccari, who plays Lumiere, said he’s enjoyed working with a large cast and seeing everyone’s “hidden talents.”

“It’s more fun than it is work,” he said.

Drama Director Glenna Gardner said picking the play “Beauty and the Beast” was an easy decision because she knew so many of her students who would be perfect for the roles.

“I picked the show according to the students we have and we have the perfect cast,” Gardner said. “It’s been fun watching them grow into their roles.”

Gardner said they started practicing in small groups since the students returned from Christmas break and in early February they brought everyone together.
