GLASGOW — Anyone who loves classic films should check out “Monday Night at the Movies” at the Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library.
The Glasgow Film Society meets every third Monday of the month at 7 p.m. to watch movies.
Some of the movies that have been shown in the past are “Maltese Falcon” and “My Darling Clementine.”
The idea for “Monday Night at the Movies” came about when the library’s outreach services director, Martha Nell Thomas, was talking to John and Linda Hitchcock, of Glasgow, about new programs the library could offer.
Thomas knew other libraries statewide have similar programs.
“It’s very popular in Lexington,” she said.
Thomas also knew the Hitchcocks were classic film buffs.
John Hitchcock introduces each classic film and shares history and movie trivia about the film.
“Before the film is screened, I talk about the film’s background, director, writers, actors and perhaps some things to be aware of while watching the film,” he said. “After the showing I wrap up with tidbits that might have spoiled the discovery of seeing the film for the first time. There are so many classic films that are overlooked due to their age the fact that many are in black-and-white, or even silent.”
Thomas acquired a grant to purchase a license to show the classic films. While the names of the films can be mentioned in inter-library literature, they cannot be advertised publically because of a copyright issue.
The films are typically chosen by Hitchcock.
“I believe the films we have selected are sure to engage all who view them. Watching an older film on television can be frustrating as many are abridged for scheduling, interrupted with commercials or have distractive station logos embedded or worse yet are show in poor quality,” he said. “The films I select for Glasgow Film Society have been, in most cases, restored to pristine condition and look great on the larger library screen.”
Hitchcock is open to requests, and has shown films that have been requested.
Attendance to the event has been low, but the Hitchcocks and Thomas are hoping it will increase.
Anyone of any age can attend, and there is no admission charge. Those who attend are treated to popcorn and movie snacks and can register for door prizes.
The next film to be shown, which will be on Nov. 16 at 7 p.m., is a 1950 Alec Guinness film, “The Last Holiday.”
