The artwork of two Glasgow artists — Paulette Peil and Linda Perkins — is now on display at the Glasgow-Barren County Chamber of Commerce.
Peil is a retired elementary school teacher, who didn’t start painting until last year.
“I started abstracts last April and then I started taking painting classes from Jef Dirig on Oct. 8,” she said. “I fell in love with abstracts and playing with colors and then I decided I wanted to do the real thing. I started taking classes and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.”
Peil didn’t start painting until her friend, local interior designer Lisa Richardson, asked her to do some abstract paintings.
“I just started playing with texture and colors and then I decided I should learn all the principles of art,” she said.
When she saw Dirig’s exhibit at the chamber of commerce, Peil said, “I thought that’s where I’m going to start.”
When Ann Stewart, marketing director for the chamber of commerce, contacted her about doing an exhibit she said she wasn’t sure she could do it because she didn’t have enough paintings.
So, Stewart suggested Peil team up with another artist to do the show.
Peil followed Stewart’s advice and invited fellow artist Linda Perkins to join her in exhibiting at the chamber of commerce.
Perkins took Peil up on her offer.
Unlike her friend, Perkins has been painting for quite a while.
“Actually, I started tole painting in about 1988,” she said.
Tole painting is a type of folk art decorative painting typically done on wood, tin and furniture.
“I was interested in painting and that was the first teacher I found. That’s how I got started,” she said.
Perkins paints with acrylics.
“I tried watercolor and it frustrated me and oil smelled too much, [but] acrylic suited me fine,” she said.
Perkins enjoys painting nature.
“I love trees and I love the beauty of God’s creations,” she said.
Perkins is an avid bird-watcher and said she enjoys painting birds.
“They do have interesting colors,” she said. “I like red birds and hummingbirds.”
Perkins has several paintings featuring birds in the exhibit, as well as some landscapes.
Most of Peil’s paintings in the exhibit are abstract, however, there is one portrait.
The exhibit is Peil’s first show. She also has work on display at Fine Arts Bistro on Glasgow’s Public Square.
Perkins has exhibited at the chamber of commerce once before and has entered her work in various contests.
She has also displayed her work at the former Bolton’s Landing restaurant.
The exhibit will be on display until July 26.
