Powell's artwork featured in solo show

GLASGOW — Mikayla Powell has been really busy the past few weeks; visiting college campuses and preparing for an art exhibit at the Glasgow-Barren County Chamber of Commerce.

The exhibit opened on Feb. 13 and features 29 works.

“Some of them are old. Some of them are from like fifth grade when I used to do charcoal and pencil,” the Glasgow High School senior said.

Others are more recent and show how much she has grown as an artist.

Mikayla began painting as a 10-year-old, starting with watercolor and then moved on to acrylics. She has recently begun working with oils.

Of the three mediums, she prefers oils.

“They move more smoothly, because acrylics, they dry really fast and you can’t work with them for very long,” she said. “But with oils, you can work with them for as along as you want. They don’t dry out until a week later, so I can kind of leave my paints out and I don’t have to put them back up. So, that’s good. It’s not a hassle.”

Her inspiration comes from life experiences.

Of all those who admire her work, her parents are probably her biggest fans.

“She amazes me with everything she creates,” Mark Powell, her father, said. “She is intense when she gets started on a project. She really gets into it. It still just amazes me with the variety of things she can create.”

Her mother, Kim, says her daughter’s artwork is an extension of who she is and is the way in which she chooses to express herself.

“It depends on her mood and the message she wants to convey at the time,” her mother said.

One of the paintings in the exhibit is titled “Cup of Hope.” It is one Mikayla did the year her grandmother, Marianna Irving, was diagnosed with cancer.

The “Cup of Hope” painting toured the United States in 2009 as part of the Lilly Oncology on Canvas Art Competition.
