Granddaughter makes a day brighter

GLASGOW — Now and again, when my routine seems dull and boredom sets in, I succumb to a rather ho-hum mood. That’s how it was going one cloudy day last week.

It was one of those gray days that couldn’t decide if it would bring snow or rain. Its cold wind was too tired to even tease the tree limbs, and if the sun had shown its face, I’m certain it would have been yawning.

I was driving home, wishing we could just skip March and get right into April. Why, I’d be happy to even mow the lawn an extra month if that could somehow be arranged.

A couple of vehicles were paused in a nearby parking lot. One was facing the other, and each of their hoods were up. As I passed by, I noticed jumper cables connected their batteries. I hardly gave it any thought, yet subconsciously, I realized that after one motor got support from the other, both vehicles would be back in traffic.

When I finally pulled in my drive, I didn’t expect the late afternoon or evening would bring anything to improve my lackluster day.

Soon, though, a telephone call gave me new hope.

My almost three-year-old granddaughter was calling from Bowling Green. She was having a mighty fine day. Actually, as I’ve witnessed her life so far, all her days have been mighty fine.

She was telling me about a matinee performance of “Snow White” that she had attended. “The witch had an apple and a big wart. It was a poisoned apple.” It was amazing to me how she could equally inflect every word in those two sentences.

“There was a wart on the apple?” I asked the granddaughter.

“No!” She giggled. “The wart was on her nose.”

Her diction began to suffer as she talked faster and faster about Ticklish, Slow Poke and Gus. I couldn’t understand for sure, but I thought she was telling me about the dwarfs. What I could understand for sure, though, was that she was at the happiest level on the happy meter.

“The witch was jealous of Snow White. She turned into an old woman with wrinkled hands.” She went on and on about the witch. I wondered if she might have a nightmare, then concluded that she was too excited about being awake to ever sleep again.

As I continued to listen, my mood began to improve. I thought of the vehicle that had been getting its battery charged. Likewise, I was getting a charge from this connection to my sweet granddaughter.

Then I was reminded that she’s getting a little sister in just a few days.

March began to look much better to me.
