GLASGOW — The second annual Barren County High School “Pink Out” was Feb. 2 at the BCHS gymnasium. More than 1,200 Barren County and Greenwood fans participated in the event to raise awareness for breast cancer that was sponsored by BCHS, the BCHS Athletic Booster Club, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and the National Guard. Contributions for the “Pink Out” included pink basketballs and T-shirts sponsored by the National Guard and pink bandannas sponsored by BCHS. Bruce Simmons, vice president of the booster club, presented a check in the amount of $2,000 to Felicia Montgomery, BCHS Relay for Life team member. “It was a touching night to see so much support for such a good cause,” said Keith Hale, BCHS principal.
The “Pink Out” originated in 2009 when members of the Trojanette basketball team had family members with breast cancer. Players approached coach John Butler about recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month. When approached by Butler, Hale thought it was a great idea and the first BCHS “Pink Out” was born. Last year, pink shirts were sold and the entire district was involved with the assistance of the girls’ basketball team, FCCLA and FBLA. This year, the booster club and FBLA members assisted with designing and selling Pink Out 2010 shirts with half of the profit being donated to the BCHS Relay for Life Team. Greenwood High School was included in the event with special “Gator” shirts being designed for them. In addition, Pink Out was districtwide again this year with classes being recognized for having largest participation. At the high school, Todd Steenbergen’s class was recognized for having the highest participation. Students wearing pink were recognized by having their picture taken in the shape of a pink ribbon in the gym.
