Heart walk set for Beaver Creek Trail

By AMBER DILLEY

GLASGOW — Beaver Creek Trail in Glasgow will host the American Heart Association’s Barren County Heart Walk on Saturday.

Registration starts at 8 a.m. and the walk begins at 9 a.m.

“We’ll have a DJ, a clown, a magician, Big Red – Western’s mascot, will be there as well,” said Michelle Alloway, division director for the AHA. “The proceeds go to funding education, research and advocacy in the community.”

The goal for this year’s walk is $59,818

“We hope to reach that,” Alloway said. “Usually, within Barren County, the turnout’s pretty good. We’ve done well, so far — we’ve already hit our sponsorship goal. We’re focusing on team involvement right now. You can still start a team, register and raise money.”

Teams get prizes for the amount of money they raise.

For $100 raised, the team gets T-shirts.

“There’s various prizes — gift certificates, emergency kits, a hammock,” Alloway said.

Founded in 1924, the American Heart Association has worked to protect people of all backgrounds from heart disease and stroke, which are the nation’s No.1 and No. 3 killers, respectively, claiming more than 910,000 lives a year in the U.S.
