Women lose big in ‘get fit’ challenge

Special report

EDMONTON — GET FIT for Ladies challenged 22 women to shape up and slim down during the Fall Biggest Loser Challenge of 2009.

For 14 weeks, they exercised, learned about nutrition, kept food diaries and met a weekly challenge that brought on the following results.

The ladies lost a total of 488 pounds and 370.75 inches combined. The winner, Brandy Morgan, personally lost 39 pounds and 20.31 percent of her body weight over the 14-week challenge. In second place was Debra Daughterty with a loss of 29 pounds and 18.35 percent of her body weight.

The combined results also included:

• Nine women had a double-digit percent of body weight lost.

• Six of them achieved their recommended Body Fat percentage.

• Twenty of the women lost 10 or more pounds.

• All of them lost 10 or more inches.

• Average body weight percentage lost was 11.06 percent.

The GET FIT for Ladies members who made up the Fall Biggest Loser Challenge were Brandy Morgan, Debra Daughterty, Janice Wilson, Brenda Judd, Patty Brown, Sarah Petranek, Melinda Cornell, Jennifer Turner, Linda Brown, Kay Wisdom, Margie Ballard, Sheila, Scott, Debbie Smith, Carla Wilson, Michelle Clark, Carol Perkins, Linda Williamson, Zoe Weiss, Teresa Shive, Karen Tudor, Misti Stephens and Karan Linkous.

Previous owner, Vicki Barnes, said that each of the 22 women learned how to eat clean and how to keep the weight off by strength training and consistent cardio exercise at least three times each week.

“It is just amazing to see their confidence and self-esteem soar when they are proud of the way they look and feel good about how their health has improved overall.  Most of them have reported lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, more energy and a better quality of life.  I am so proud of their personal success.” Barnes said. “They are all winners.”

In the spring, Barnes coached 20 ladies through the Spring Biggest Loser Challenge and the combined results of both challenges in 2009 were the following: 42 GET FIT for Ladies members lost a total of 1,028 pounds and 733.75 inches in 2009.

That is over a half-ton of weight
