GLASGOW — A little bit of rain didn’t deter any of the attendees at the kick-off day for the 55th annual Barren County Fair Tuesday evening.
As soon as the gates opened people were lining up at the food stands, cattle shows, gospel singing and tractor pulls.
Linda and Kevin Henry, of Indiana, were taking in all the sights and sounds as first-time visitors to Kentucky.
“We’re a little disappointed that it’s started raining, but there’s plenty of tents set up and all kinds of wonderful things to do,” Linda said while huddled in a tent by the gospel singing booth. “And what a nice thing to listen to while we’re waiting out the rain,” referring to The Sneed Family, who was singing for the fourth time at the fair.
Jeff Sneed said before the group took the stage that he hadn’t had a chance to do much at the fair yet, but he did make sure to visit the cattlemen’s association tent.
“I always go to the cattlemen’s association and get one of their sandwiches,” he said. “My favorite thing about the fair is the excitement of the whole deal with everybody running here and there. You get to see everybody from the community having fun. It is hard to keep people’s attention with a tractor pull going on one side of you and a cattle show on the other, but I’m glad gospel music is represented here and people are able to enjoy it.”
Kevin Henry commented during the singing that he enjoyed the fact that he could hear the cows making their presence known from all the way across the fairgrounds.
“If I want to go see the cattle show after it stops raining, I’ll just have to follow the moos,” he joked.
The Henrys were from “the big city” and said they have enjoyed traveling through rural Indiana and Kentucky as part of a “well-deserved retirement.”
The Sneed Family was followed on stage by Long Creek Bluegrass.
The first night of the fair also featured the open, 4-H and FFA Beef Cattle Show as well as a tractor pull.
Events at the fair continue Wednesday with the 4-H and FFA Dairy Cattle Show, open dairy show, baby show and the Tiny and Little Mr. & Miss Barren County Fair pageants.
