GLASGOW —
One local elementary school is reaping the rewards of devoting two months to being active 20 minutes every day.
South Green Elementary School participated in Radio Disney and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s Get Active, Get Fit School Challenge throughout October and November 2011, a program where they challenged their students to participate in 20 minutes of physical activity every day.
Gym teacher Corey Haynes said the Get Fit program helped South Green think about children’s fitness on a school-wide level. Instead of just providing physical activity during gym class, South Green encouraged fitness breaks during classroom time and also taught students different things to do in order to stay active at home.
“Now we’re trying to include everybody, all the teachers, trying to include (physical activity) all through the day,” Haynes said.
Students kept records of how much activity they did each day, and the school had gym class, recess, fitness breaks and a YMCA morning program to help the students get their fitness time at school. If a student was out sick or couldn’t participate in an activity during the school day, Haynes said he taught a lot of activities in which the students didn’t need any equipment, so they could be fit no matter where they were.
For some surprisingly busy elementary students, it was hard to find time to be physically active. Third-grader Cade Bishop said it was more challenging than he expected.
“I thought it’d be easy, but lots of things interfered,” said Bishop, who participates in academic team and Awana, among other extracurriculars.
While Bishop struggled to remember time for basketball practice, Emily Clapp said she found a lot of activities she enjoyed doing in order to be fit, such as jogging, jumping jacks and running.
“It’s great,” Clapp said.
While the school didn’t win the grand prize of a Radio Disney dance party, they won a deluxe activity kit, which included brand new gym and recess equipment. To Haynes and SGE Principal Chad Muhlenkamp, the new equipment was a much better prize than a dance party, which would have lasted less than a day.
“We get to reap the benefits from this for a long time,” Muhlenkamp said.
In fact, it was great timing, Haynes said. Much of South Green’s equipment had started to wear out, and Haynes had already talked to Muhlenkamp about starting to replace the school’s gym equipment.
“This helped,” Haynes said. “It replenished a whole lot. (The students) hadn’t seen anything new in a while.”
The new equipment, especially the basketballs, are a lot better, according to third-grader John Richardson. Although Richardson said sometimes keeping up with 20 minutes of physical activity a day was difficult, he did learn some sage advice for his elders.
“When they get old, (don’t) sit on the couch, eat chips and watch T.V. all day. Get active,” Richardson said.
