GLASGOW — Road crews are prepped and ready for the winter storm on its way this afternoon and through the weekend.
Tony Richey, director of the Barren County Office of Emer-gency Management said the road crews and the emergency shelters are all on alert.
“Everyone’s ready,” Richey said. “We’ve checked our equipment, the main roads have been pre-treated, our portable generators are ready, we’re all pulling together.”
The state roads were pre-treated with an anti-icing agent Wednesday and Thursday, according to Keirsten Jaggers, public information officer for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, District 3. Forecasts that have been provided to the transportaion cabinet predict snow would start hitting between 10 and 11 a.m.
“We’ve hit the interstates and parkways, we’ll continue with the secondary routes,” Jaggers said. “We’ve got 80 trucks and our contract trucks notified so we’ll be ready to go.”
The Salvation Army and other emergency agencies have been notified and a shelter is being established at the Columbia Avenue Church of Christ. Other places are ready to step in as well, such as the Cave City Convention Center. The mass notification system that Richey introduced a few weeks ago is ready to be used in the event of power outages or other emergencies.
“The weather’s slower than they thought so it will be better as far as traffic is concerned if the snow comes later, but we’re ready,” Richey said.
The National Weather Service reports snow will begin in Glasgow mainly after noon Friday with about five inches of accumulation possible through Friday night. A winter storm warning has already been issued for all of southcentral Kentucky this afternoon through Saturday afternoon. Temperatures will be the in the mid-to-late 20s.
Barren County, Glasgow Caverna, Metcalfe and Monroe schools are all closed for Friday.
