GLASGOW —
A man tries to enjoy the everyday things in life and live life to the fullest in a small town, while narrowly avoiding his family’s attempts to institutionalize him.
All this because of a puca – a creature in Irish folklore imagined as a human-sized rabbit – who follows Mr. Elwood P. Dowd around and engages him in conversation.
“To Dr. Sanderson, it’s all science,” said Rick Barnes, who plays Dowd in the Far Off Broadway Players’ version, being presented at the Glasgow Plaza Theatre. “For Dowd, it’s about trying to connect people and make everybody feel like they can be themselves.”
Barnes knows the play well from both sides of the spectrum, having played Dr. Lyman Sanderson, the doctor charged with bringing Dowd into Chumley’s Rest, at the Barn Lot Theater. But in his new role, Barnes, an investment adviser from Edmonton, has new challenges of playing one character, and interacting with an imaginary one.
“You have to be an actor with an imaginary friend,” Barnes said. “You have to pretend and pretend on top of it.”
