Bounty picked first

Barren County farmers market takes top honors

GLASGOW — The Bounty of the Barrens Farmers’ Market has been named top mid-sized farmers market in Kentucky for 2012 by the Kentucky Farmers’ Market Association.

Those involved with Bounty of the Barrens and its sponsor organization, Sustainable Glasgow, were pleasantly to receive the first place prize. The local market won second place last year, and many thought that would preclude them from placing again this year. Bill Green, who does bookkeeping for the market and filled out this year’s application, said the notification of first place was a surprise to everyone.

“I actually thought we had not a single chance to win it,” Green said, adding that even though she didn’t expect anything, she still wanted to make sure BOTBM had a standout application. “My goal this year was to put together an application that they at least had to pay attention to.”

Dr. William Travis, president of Sustainable Glasgow, said he also thought the market would be out of the running for a while, but he was happy the market got recognized.

“There are a lot of people who put a lot of work into this,” Travis said.

Bounty of the Barrens has evolved over the last four years, Travis said. The original Glasgow farmers market started at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, and when Sustainable Glasgow developed, it sponsored the transition of the market into the Bounty of the Barrens, which started setting up in the BB&T Bank parking lot on Saturdays. From BB&T, the market moved to the downtown square. The move to the square has done wonders not only for Bounty of the Barrens, but for the downtown area, Travis said.

“I think that has really reinvigorated the downtown atmosphere, on Saturdays at least,” Travis said.
