Summer Shade woman waits for news in meningitis scare after getting shot at St. Thomas Outpatient Neurological Center

GLASGOW — Donna Branham is playing a waiting game.

She is one of many patients who may have contracted fungal meningitis from a steroid injection she received for back pain at St. Thomas Outpatient Neurological Center in Nashville.

Branham, of Summer Shade, suffers from degenerative disc disease and was referred by her physician to the neurological center for treatment. She has had only one injection, which was on Sept. 7. She was scheduled to receive another on Sept. 21, but her appointment was cancelled due to her doctor having an emergency.

Her appointment was rescheduled for Sept. 24, but cancelled again due to the machines that administer the injections being out of order and Branham was told to check back the next day.

It was that day, Sept. 25, that she learned about the fungal meningitis outbreak through a television news broadcast. The following day she received a phone call from her doctor’s office asking if she was feeling O.K.

“I told them I was, of course, I already knew about the stuff on TV by then,” she said.

Branham did not receive a letter from St. Thomas Outpatient Neurological Center alerting her of the meningitis outbreak until Oct. 4.

“That’s the first information I got from them at all saying they had an outbreak,” she said.
