Glasgow's Extreme Fitness Runs fight childhood obesity

GLASGOW — Along with the second annual Extreme Fitness Run for Health, this Saturday Glasgow will have a new half-mile  Kids Fun Run. The Kids Fun Run is being put on by the Glasgow-Barren County Chamber of Commerce’s healthcare committee as part of its “We Can!” initiative. Proceeds from both runs will benefit Community Medical Care.

The We Can program came to Glasgow last summer, according to Laura Belcher, a member of the committee and chief of planning and development at T.J. Samson Community Development. It is a national initiative to end childhood obesity by promoting increased physical activity, improved food choices and reduced screen time. We Can stands for Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity and Nutrition. The chamber-sponsored committee has been working to get Barren County designated a “We Can” community.

“In order to be designated a We Can community, one of the elements is to have a community event,” Belcher said.

The committee was formed too late in 2011 to organize a Fun Run, but this year decided to partner with Extreme Fitness to promote a kids’ run alongside the 5K, Belcher said. There will be inflatables, pumpkin decorating, t-shirts and goodie bags Saturday morning.

“All just for people to become aware that the program exists,” Belcher said.
