RSVP volunteers can help community

GLASGOW — Charlene Wisdom is a volunteer for the Barren River Animal Welfare Association through Community Action of Southern Kentucky’s Retired and Volunteer Senior Program.

Wisdom, along with Lenora Metcalfe, also a RSVP volunteer, help out at the shelter by working the front desk each Tuesday, which allows the shelter staff time to do temperament tests with dogs — checking to see how dogs react to cats, other dogs and during certain situations.

Wisdom and Metcalfe became RSVP volunteers three years ago.

“As a volunteer, I like animals and I like working with the public, so this seemed like a good fit,” Wisdom said.

Metcalfe is also an animal lover.

“I love being with them,” she said. “This way I can enjoy them without taking all of them home.”

Both helped out at the shelter before they retired from their jobs. The RSVP program affords them the opportunity to continue their volunteer work at the shelter.
