Park City woman dies in crash

By BURTON SPEAKMAN

GLASGOW — A Park City woman was killed Thursday in a crash on New Bowling Green Road about three miles northeast of the Warren County line.

Mary Summers, 39, was driving east on New Bowling Green Road around 4:30 p.m. when she lost control of the 1999 Pontiac Bonneville she was driving. Summers’ vehicle drove off the edge of the roadway, then came back across the road and into the opposite lane before flipping. The vehicle stopped on its side in a ditch, according to a Barren County Sheriff’s release. The crash occurred between the Bon Ayr and Merry Oaks communities.

The passenger in the vehicle, Charles R. Hewgley, of Bowling Green, was able to pull himself from the vehicle. He was taken to T.J. Samson Community Hospital where he was treated for injuries and released, according to the report.

Summers was pronounced dead at the scene by Barren County Coroner Mike Swift.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, said Sheriff Chris Eaton.

There were no apparent road conditions that would have been a factor, he said. Speed is being considered as a possible cause of the crash.

“We’re fortunate in this county to have two deputies who are trained accident reconstructionists,” Eaton said. “They’ll be back out there today going back over the scene.”

Both Summers and Hewgley were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

The crash closed the roadway for about two hours while the scene was being investigated, according to the report. This is the sixth fatality investigated by the Barren County Sheriff’s Office in 2009.
