Teacher shows how to make history fun

GLASGOW — Stephen Botts is a history buff, but after playing a game of History Password, he discovered he may need to brush up on some facts.

Although somewhat embarrassed about what he didn't know, Botts said the game “was fun.”

He was one of several people who turned out to hear Todd Steenbergen, a Barren County High School history teacher, speak Thursday night at the South Central Kentucky Historical and Genealogical Society meeting at Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library. The subject of his talk was “Teaching History in the 21st Century.”

History Password is one of the tools Steenbergen uses to help his students learn historical facts.

To play the game, participants are asked to describe various events, and sometimes people and important quotes to each other without revealing the “password” or the thing that was being described.

Botts liked Steenbergen's idea of using such a game to help students learn.  

“I would have liked to have had a teacher like that when I was in school,” he said.

Often students come to history class with the notion that it's going to be boring, Steenbergen said.

“Hopefully, by the last time they come into my class it's more fun,” he said. “Hopefully, they are learning something as well and that is the key goal.”
