District opens doors to new GHS

GLASGOW — More than 100 teachers, staff, students and community members packed into Glasgow High School auditorium for a dedication ceremony Sunday afternoon.

A brief glimpse into the rich Scottie history was shared and the board members and community support that made the new building possible.

Senator David Givens, who spoke at the event, said he could recall how large and impressive the old GHS building seemed to a teenager from a small high school in Green County.

By the time he got reacquainted with the staff and the building in 2009, GHS was about 46 years old and labeled by the Kentucky Department of Education as a category four school in need of repair. Though the school had a laundry list of needed renovations, it was a tough sell to get the state to help fund repairs on category four when several schools statewide were deemed in worse shape as a category five.

In order to get the state to match the school’s new high school funding, the school board had to pass a nickel tax. Givens said the board members feared back lash from the community, but instead received their support. He said the agreement was almost like a nod of a shared vision between the school administration and the community.

“It’s not just about the building. It’s the students, staff and faculty that continue to make the learning environment great,” he said. “I’m more excited for 15 to 20 years from now when the current high school students will be the future leaders.”
