Campbell named interim superintendent

GLASGOW — A special meeting of the Glasgow Board of Education was called at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Glasgow Middle School for the purpose of allowing board members to interview two potential candidates for the post of interim superintendent of Glasgow Independent Schools.

Former superintendents Charlie Campbell, of the Barren County School District, and Larry Williams, of the Allen County-Scottsville School District, met with the board in closed session to talk about taking over the interim position at Glasgow.

Following interviews with both men and deliberation by the board, the five members voted to hire Campbell at about 3 p.m. Saturday. He will serve in an interim role until June 30.

Campbell currently serves on the board of directors of the Glasgow-Barren County Indus-trial Development Authority and was superintendent for Barren County from 1993 to 2000 before retiring.

The former superintendent has an extensive history working in school districts throughout the state and working on construction projects in those districts.

He started his administrative career in Warren County as assistant superintendent under Robert Gover. He was superintendent in Crittenden County where he oversaw the consolidation of three schools and built the first new elementary there in approximately 50 years. He spent 12 years as superintendent in Simpson County during which time there was a building addition to Franklin Elementary and the construction of new middle and elementary schools.

Campbell finished his education career after serving Barren County Schools as superintendent for seven years. He and board members during that time initiated the district’s successful building program that most recently resulted in the construction of a new elementary school in the district.

“I’ve had construction in every district I’ve been in,” Campbell said.

In Warren County, that included working with Gover on schools at Alvaton, Bristow, Warren East and Warren Central high schools.

The emphasis on the need for construction experience of candidates is based on the Glasgow district’s building plan to replace the current Glasgow High School.

Glasgow board vice chairman LaDonna Rogers made the motion to hire Campbell as interim, which was seconded by board member Chris Lawrence. The board voted unanimously to hire Campbell to the six-month position.

Campbell replaces superintendent Kathy E. Goff, who requested to be released from her contract on Jan. 4 during a special-called meeting of the board at the central office.
