GLASGOW — Three men were arrested Tuesday morning in east Barren County after allegedly stealing a truck in Warren County.
Barren County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Thomas L. Upton, 29, of Smiths Grove; Danny W. Gregory, 21, of Smiths Grove; and Jonathon M. Ballard, 20, of Glasgow, after they were caught following a complaint to law enforcement about three men in a wooded area near a creek-bed trying to move a 1996 Chevrolet pickup truck that had become stuck. A nearby resident who heard the subjects took pictures of the men before they fled on foot.
When BCSO deputies and Kentucky State Police troopers arrived on the scene, the resident gave law enforcement the pictures. After further investigation, officers searched a home on Young Road and found all three men. They were able to identify all three by the photos taken by the resident.
Sheriff Chris Eaton plans to commend the resident for his courageous actions at the scene that led to the arrest of the men.
“Any time you have citizens willing to protect their property and their community, that’s great,” Eaton said. “I’m glad we live in a community where that happens.”
Eaton also said that without the help of citizens, most of the crimes in the community would have been much more difficult to solve.
“I’ve done maybe two crimes where I’ve had things happen that allowed me to solve it without much help, but everything else I’ve ever solved has been with the help of the community,” he said.
Upton, Gregory and Ballard are all charged with receiving stolen property under $10,000. The charges were enhanced due to the presence of a firearm.
Upton was also served with two Barren County warrants, one for first-degree wanton endangerment, first-degree fleeing or evading police, reckless driving and knowingly possessing anhydrous ammonia in an unapproved container with the intent to manufacture methamphetamine, and the other for third-degree burglary, theft by unlawful taking and tampering with physical evidence. He was also served a Warren County warrant for contempt of court-failure to pay or appear. He is being held on $15,000 cash bond at the Barren County Corrections Center.
Gregory was served a Barren County warrant for probable cause-probation violation. He and Ballard were also served a court order from Metcalfe County for probable cause-violation of bond conditions. Both are being held on $5,000 bond at the jail.
Additional charges from Warren County in regards to the stolen vehicle are pending investigation.
