GLASGOW — A Barren County man who was previously convicted of murder and armed robbery, among other charges, pleaded guilty to possession of a stolen firearm by a convicted felon and being an armed career criminal, Thursday.
Thomas W. Simpson, 57, admitted on May 5, 2009, to possessing a Smith and Wesson revolver and 31 rounds of ammunition, all of which he had stolen from a local resident, according to a report from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Louisville.
Simpson admitted he was a convicted felon. Simpson had been convicted of murder in Dyer County, Tenn., armed robbery with a deadly weapon in Knox County, Tenn., escapes in Lauderdale County, Tenn., bank robbery and one count of using firearm to commit a felony in London, armed robbery and one count of maliciously shooting and wounding with intent to kill in Bell County and Escape in Oldham County.
It is anticipated that Simpson will be sentenced to 14 years in prison, followed by at least five years of supervised release. He is not eligible for parole in the federal judicial system, according to the U.S. Attorney’s report.
The prosecution was done under Project Backfire, a cooperative effort by local and state law enforcement, the ATF and the United States Attorney’s Office to ensure that firearm offenses are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the state and federal law.
The Bowling Green Field Office of the ATF conducted the investigation in partnership with the Barren County Sheriff’s Office.
The guilt plea was given before U.S. District Judge in Bowling Green, Joseph H. McKinley, Jr. Simpson’s sentencing is scheduled for June 4.
