GLASGOW —
In spite of its dreamy name, the Goodnight Inn is a place for entertaining and dining, not sleeping. The small event venue in the Goodnight community of Barren County has been providing dinner parties, luncheons and wedding receptions to local residents for more than a decade.
The home-turned-venue has been in Martha Terry’s family for fifty years. It was originally built in 1910 by a country doctor named Thomas F. Miller, and the building served as his office as well as his family’s home. It eventually came into possession of Terry’s family, and her parents owned it and she and her siblings inherited the homestead when their mother died in 1999.
“This was my mother and father’s. This was home,” Terry said.
Terry bought her siblings out of their share, knowing immediately what she wanted to do with the house. Hosting and catering events in the Goodnight Inn is the culmination of a lifelong dream, Terry said.
“It’s just something I always wanted to do,” Terry said. “Even in high school, I knew I wanted to have a place of my own and do teas and things.”
Terry studied home economics in college, and retired from a 29-year teaching career just two years before she inherited Goodnight Inn. As a hostess, she accommodates wedding receptions, dinners, holiday parties, luncheons, teas and manners classes, for groups of up to 35. As a caterer, Terry specializes in traditional, home-cooked food ranging from chicken and country ham to peppermint cheesecake and Italian cream cake.
“I love to do my special country ham, pork loins, and I really enjoy making desserts,” Terry said.
