Search continues for principal; legislation could change process

EDMONTON — The search for a new principal for Metcalfe County High School continues.

The position, which became available recently when David Nole voluntarily stepped down in December to take the district math coach position, was posted on the Kentucky Educator Placement Service’s Web site on March 2.

The deadline for applying for the job is April 2.

The high school’s site-based decision-making council will be trained on the selection process on March 22.

According to the Kentucky Department of Education, the SBDM will select the new principal from a pool of applicants recommended by superintendent Pat Hurt, who can provide additional applicants upon request of the SBDM when qualified applicants are available.

“We are looking for a proven instructional leader with high school experience preferred,” Hurt said.

As a parent of a senior, Steve Thompson, chairman of the Metcalfe County Board of Education, said there are certain qualities he would like to see in the school’s next principal.

“I really want somebody who is community oriented, that’s student centered, who can be tough when he needs to be tough, but has a sense of humor and will get up at a pep rally and act like a kid if that’s what it takes,” he said. “There’s a lot of good people out here that can do that. He needs to have a mind for curriculum, but he also needs a heart for relationships.”

The SBDM has until July 1 to make a selection, Hurt said.

There is one piece of legislation that could change how principals are selected if adopted.

“Right now House Bill 322 could bring balance to the equation of principal selection but until we know more about the success of the intended legislation — the final decision rests with the SBDM,” said Hurt.

If adopted, HB 322 will allow superintendents to select the new principal after consultation with the school council.

“I support the bill,” Thompson said. “I just feel like it’s [the principal] one of the most viable pieces in the education chain. It’s very difficult for the superintendent to evaluate someone that they didn’t hire.”

Thompson would also like to see SBDM’s have more parent representation, with principals having a tie-breaking vote.

“I just feel like it would be a better working situation,” he said, adding he is talking to state legislators about his opinions. “I wish it would pass. I just feel like it would be a better working situation.”

Brad Hughes, spokesman for the Kentucky School Board Association, said it’s too early to predict the outcome of the legislation.

“Our bottom line, hope, is that the bill will put superintendents and councils in a more working partnership rather than having the superintendent making the hire and cutting the council out entirely,” he said.
