John Michael Montgomery: Living the life of a gypsy — then and now

Will perform in Glasgow on Saturday

GLASGOW — John Michael Montgomery grew up living the life of a gypsy, or at least that’s what he tells people.

He and his brother, Eddie, often tagged along with their parents, who performed often while traveling throughout central Kentucky.

His father was a self-taught guitar player who learned how to pick and sing by listening to the Grand Ole Opry. When his father married his mother, she learned how to play the drums and sing.

“They played some where every weekend,” Montgomery said.

Montgomery is still living the life of a gypsy. He’s on the road touring and performing the songs that made him a superstar.

“I still love it today,” he said.

He credits his musical background for his successful career.

“Growing up in a musical family like that it’s been in our blood since day one. We’ve been fortunate enough to be able to do it for a living,” he said.

Montgomery grew up listening to popular rock bands of the late 1970s and early 1980s, such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zepplin and AC/DC.

And although he enjoyed listening to rock, he also liked listening to traditional country performed by such legends as Merle Haggard, Hank Williams Jr. and George Strait.

The music he performs was influenced by both rock and traditional country and is a blend of both genres, which he defines as being outlaw country.
