Glasgow PD arrest five on drug charges

GLASGOW — Glasgow Police continued their efforts to hamper local drug crime and made multiple drug arrests following routine traffic stops Wednesday night.

Officer Jessie Barton executed a traffic stop on West Front Street at 5 p.m. Wednesday on a 1990 Honda Accord being driven by John Howard Crain, 62, 175 Bill Blastin Rd., Horse Cave, for failure of a passenger to wear a seat belt.

Dispatch advised Barton that complaints of manufacturing methamphetamine had been reported by Cave City Police Officer Robert Smith on the two passengers in the vehicle, Christopher Lee Johnson, 26, 175 Bill Blastin Rd., Horse Cave, and Timothy A. Smith, 28, of 717 Roy Can Rd., Horse Cave, according to a GPD report.

After Barton advised Smith and Johnson of the complaints, he proceeded to ask Crain for consent to search his vehicle.

Barton received verbal consent and found a small bag of meth in a smokeless tobacco can that was inside a boot in the back floorboard. Also found behind the passenger seat was an apparatus with a small amount of residue that was used to smoke meth. No one in the vehicle would claim ownership of the items, so all three were arrested for possession of meth, according to the report.

After further questioning by Sgt. Jason Morgan, the three suspects said they had just left an address on East Main Street.

Morgan then went to the residence around 6:45 p.m. Wednesday and made contact with Lisa Gail Taylor, 44, of 306 East Main St., to verify that the drugs had not come from there, according to a separate GPD report.

Taylor is currently on probation for trafficking in meth and possession of meth and she was Mirandized upon initial contact.

After receiving consent to search, Morgan saw drug paraphernalia in plain view in a garbage can. Taylor allegedly admitted that she just smoked methamphetamine with Crain, Johnson and Smith and that she had given them a small bag of meth in exchange for one box of 15 Claritin D tablets.

According to the report, Taylor allegedly stated that she intended to trade those pills to someone who would use them for manufacturing meth.

Taylor also had a prescription for Hydrocodone with several missing. Upon further questioning by Morgan, she allegedly said she sold them that day for $3.50 apiece.

Morgan reported that the drug paraphernalia in the garbage can was burnt tin foil with meth residue on it. Taylor allegedly said she had used this foil to smoke the meth with her boyfriend and the other three subjects who were arrested out of the car that had just left her residence.

Upon hearing that the K-9 narcotics unit had been called, Taylor produced a small plastic container from under her mattress containing another small bag of meth, according to the report.

Taylor was arrested and charged with five separate counts: first-degree possession of a controlled substance, second or greater offense, a class C felony; first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, second or greater offense a class B felony; second-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, first offense, a class D felony; possession of drug paraphernalia, second or greater offense, a class D felony; and unlawful possession of a meth precursor, first offense, a class D felony. Class C felonies carry a possible prison sentence of 5 to 10 years in prison, class D felonies have a range of 1 to 5 years.

She was lodged in the Barren County Correction Center on a $10,000 cash or approved surety bond.

Crain, Johnson and Smith were charged with two counts each of first-degree possession of a controlled substance, first offense a class D felony; and possession of drug paraphernalia, first offense, a class A misdemeanor. All three were lodged in the Barren County Correction Center on $2,500 cash or approved surety bonds. A class A misdemeanor has a possible sentence of up to 12 months in jail.

In a separate incident, a Glasgow man was also arrested early Thursday morning on a drug trafficking charge.

Delanne Gay Shelton, 45, of 1104 Columbia Ave., Eastbrook Estates, was taken into custody after Sgt. Brad Lewis observed a 1995 Chevrolet Lumina with a man and a woman inside, which quickly left the area when they saw him.

Lewis discovered the owner of the vehicle had a protective order when he ran the license plate and initiated a traffic stop, according to a police report.

Upon contact with the driver and Shelton, who was a passenger, Lewis reported detecting an odor of marijuana and noticed both occupants were very nervous.

Lewis asked Shelton if he had anything illegal in the vehicle and he allegedly then produced a marijuana joint.

Shelton also had an almost empty Hydrocodone bottle and a cigarette pack containing $61. After being advised of his rights, Shelton allegedly stated that he had been selling Hydrocodone and had more marijuana at his residence.

The suspect was taken to his home where K-9 Ranger located a bottle with marijuana in it. Lewis also reported several items of paraphernalia and more pill bottles.

Shelton allegedly said he sold Hydrocodone from at least four different prescriptions, according to the report.

He was charged with second-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, first offense, a class D felony; possession of marijuana, a class A misdemeanor; and possession of drug paraphernalia, first offense, a class A misdemeanor.

He was lodged in the Barren County Correction Center. No bond amount was listed.

Glasgow Police are stepping up their efforts against drug crimes, according to Chief Horace Johnson.

“We are continually and aggressively pursuing drug dealers in Glasgow,” he said Thursday morning.
