BAVEL hosts virtual college open house

GLASGOW — Students from Barren County School District’s virtual school, BAVEL, explored Western Kentucky University and learned about the steps to prepare for college all at the comfort of their own home.

The alternative school has all their classes online and caters to about 300 students in grades sixth through high school seniors all over Kentucky. Tuesday night BAVEL hosted their first online college open house with guest speaker John Roberts, coordinator for communications and student recruitment at WKU-Glasgow. Bavel co-director Phillip Napier said the webinar gave nontraditional students a chance to learn more about college and planning their life after high school.

“You can find a lot of information on the internet, but having that human interaction to see how to plan is a great thing,” Napier said.

Napier said it was a bit of a challenge to arrange a college guest speaker for a virtual school, especially for students in different time zones all across Kentucky. He said they picked 6 p.m. central standard time to allow parents to attend with students and ask questions.

Around 24 students from seventh grade through high school logged into the webinar Tuesday evening, and each registered student was entered into a drawing to win a $500 WKU scholarship. Roberts presented information about WKU and the five steps to preparing for college.
