Edmonton council offers fiscal court partnership

GLASGOW — Edmonton City Council members voted Monday night to grant the Metcalfe County Fiscal Court an additional 60 days to decide if it would like to collaborate in developing a joint city-county planning commission and a comprehensive plan.

A letter notifying magistrates of the council’s intent will be mailed today and that is when the fiscal court’s 60 days will begin.

The council invited magistrates to join them in creating a joint city-county planning commission and a comprehensive plan because a state law says they must do so.

The council has been interested in implementing planning for quite some time.

“We just feel like it’s needed here in the city; to get a comprehensive plan developed and maybe take a look at zoning a later date, but we’ve got to have that comprehensive plan done first before the city can consider zoning,” Mayor Howard Garret said.

There is additional opportunity for the city and the county to receive grant funding if planning is implemented. Such grants that may become available to the city would be those regarding Renaissance Main Street funding.
