A stitch in time

Quilt show highlights handcrafted treasures

Paul Jones still has the quilt his mother, Dorothy Steenburgen, gave him.

Jones, of Mansfield, Ohio, said his mother, from Fountain Run, made sure all her children and grandchildren - 10 total - got one of her creations.

“My mom ... she made quilts all the time,” he said.

Jones was perusing the quilt creations of others Saturday at the opening of “Quilts of the Barrens” at the South Central Kentucky Cultural Center.

Helen Simpson, with the Quilting Friends Quilt Guild of Glasgow, said they have about 100 quilts on display.

They include antique quilts from the Museum of the Barrens and creations from personal collections around the community.

Simpson is encouraging others to bring their quilts and put them on display. The show runs through Aug. 24.

A lifelong quilter, Simpson said she first began at age 8.

She has crafted more than 500 quilts and, like Jones’ mother, gave one to each of her children and grandchildren.

Simpson added she has begun work on quilts to give to her great-grandchildren.

Of course, she still has plenty for herself.

“I’ve got over 100 (quilts) in my home,” Simpson said.
