Coroner to subpoena police file on jail death
FRANKFORT — The coroner in Frankfort said he plans to subpoena police files in his investigation of a Salvadoran immigrant’s death in the Franklin County Regional Jail.
Franklin County Coroner Will Harrod told the Lexington Herald-Leader he was called to the hospital after Ana Romero Rivera died, not to the jail where the death occurred.
Police are investigating the 44-year-old immigrant’s death as a suicide.
She had been placed in isolation for not eating and a preliminary autopsy showed she died of asphyxia from hanging.
Although Rivera was held at the local jail, she was in the custody of U.S. marshals, awaiting deportation after pleading guilty to immigration fraud.
Harrod said he was awaiting the police report, toxicology findings and a final autopsy report before issuing his final report on her death.
