Many turn out for event

The annual Barren County Heart Walk kicked off Saturday morning with a good turnout.

“We usually get about 300 people,” said Michelle Alloway, division director for the American Heart Association. “It’s a good turnout, it’s nice to see every one come out and support a good cause.”

Before the walk, teams stretched out using the Zumba routine and enjoyed a performance from local magician, Brad Lowe.

Freddie Norris, chair of the heart walk committee, said that each year, almost 600 heart walks are held across the nation.

“Why do we do this?,” he asked. “Because we know that heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 killers in America, because we know someone who has had heart surgery or a heart attack, or because we have had a personal experience with cardiovascular disease ourselves. Today’s heart walk will provide needed funds for scientific research and education and help to reduce death and disability due to cardiovascular diseases.”

Jamie Lowe, who was helping her husband, Brad, with his magician performance, said the event was something they’d always wanted to participate in.

“A good friend of ours is an organizer for this and she asked (Brad) to come down and entertain the crowd,” Lowe said. “Her husband has had open heart surgery, there’s a little girl that goes to our church who’s had open heart surgery. We’ve had lots of people that this has effected in our lives. We felt like this was a good cause to come and participate in.”
