Ceremony signifies command change

Richardson takes over 1/623rd

GLASGOW — There was a changing of the guard Sunday at Barren County Trojan Academy in Glasgow.

Lieutenant Colonel Benny R. Richardson took command of the 1st Battalion, 623rd Field Artillery (HIMARS) Kentucky Army National Guard during a ceremony at the school before the assembled Guard troops of his new command and members of the public.

He replaces LTC John P. Dooley Jr. who has served in the post since December 2005.

Richardson has been an officer in the Kentucky Army National Guard since 1985. He completed Reserve Officer Training at the University of Kentucky and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in July of 1985.

He completed courses in field artillery, basic and advanced, combined arms and service staff school and command and general staff officer course. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from U.K. in 1985.

During his 23-year career, Richardson has served the 1/623rd FA in many different capacities including Fire Direction Officer, Battery Executive Officer, Recon Survey Officer and Battery Commander, as well as several postings to the 138th FA Brigade. His most recent assignments include serving as an adviser to the Afghanistan Army from March 2005 to August 2006 and as an equal opportunity manager for the Guard in Frankfort.

Richardson lives in Georgetown and has three children. He said he spent part of his childhood in Glasgow and is happy to have returned to lead the 1/623rd.
