GPD urges caution when weather is poor

GLASGOW — Slick, snowy roads Monday morning contributed to an unusual increase in the number of vehicle wrecks in the area.

Officers of the Glasgow Police Department were called to eight non-injury accident scenes during a 10-hour period, according to Capt. Kent Keen, GPD public information officer. The wrecks occurred on U.S. 31E near Vangard Labs, on Longhunters Trail, in two separate incidents on Ky. 63 and in parking lots at Kmart, ACK Controls and Ralph Bunche Center.

Barren County Sheriff’s deputies responded to five wrecks on Monday, said Trevor B. Phillips, BCSO public relations director. Those incidents occurred at the intersection of U.S. 31E south and Haywood-Cedar Grove Road, on Austin Tracy Road, Sowers Road, Hiseville-Bear Wallow Road and Cumberland Parkway.

Keen said the police department would like to remind drivers to use extreme caution when driving on wet roads and allow extra time to arrive at destinations.

“Every possible way to increase visibility should be utilized including driving with headlights on any time it is raining or snowing,” he added.

On snowy and icy days, the number of wrecks usually more than double due to lack of experience on snow and ice and drivers attempting to travel when they really don’t have to, Keen said. He added that these types of wrecks tie up the department’s resources because generally officers spend an extra hour on each accident of this type.
