GLASGOW — Eight people, including six Metcalfe County students, were treated and released at a local hospital for injuries sustained in a school bus wreck Thursday afternoon.
The wreck occurred around 4 p.m. near the Chicken Bristle community of Metcalfe County on Ratliff Mitchell Road at the intersection of Savoyard Park Road and Ky. 314, according to the Kentucky State Police.
The bus was delivering students to their homes at the end of the school day.
The school bus, which was being driven by Herman Yates, 70, of Horse Cave, was attempting to cross at the intersection and pulled into the path of a 1997 Ford Ranger pickup operated by Jeffery E. Childress, 20, of Glasgow. The pickup struck the bus in the passenger side front end, the state police said.
Yates and Childress were treated and released at T.J. Samson Community Hospital, as well as the six students.
Children who were taken to the hospital were: Genesis Nickson, 12, of Horse Cave; Melody Proffitt, 15, of Center; Cynthia Proffitt, 14, of Center; Jessica Wesley, 12, of Center; Lillian Wesley, 9, of Center; and Jamie Ballard, 13, of Hardyville. There were 26 passengers on the bus.
“No one was seriously hurt. We took seven to eight children who complained with either their necks or backs hurting to be checked out (at the hospital),” said Patricia Hurt, superintendent of Metcalfe County Schools. “We took precautionary measures and had them checked out. The blessing for me was there were no serious injuries.”
Children who were not transported to a hospital for medical care were either picked up by their parents at the scene or took another bus home, she said.
Hurt commended the school district’s staff in handling the situation.
“Everything was handled well by the staff,” she said.
