GLASGOW — This year will mark the 75th anniversary for the Plaza Theatre, and the milestone will not go unnoticed.
A celebration is being planned to commemorate the event. The theater opened on Aug. 23, 1934 with the movie, “The Cat’s Paw,” starring Harold Lloyd, and the 75th anniversary celebration is expected to take place the weekend of Aug. 23.
“We’re planning a weekend full of events for that Friday, Saturday and Sunday,” said Steve Jones, theater director.
“We will probably be creating a series of events that will also be in good position to kick off our season for that year. We’re trying to see if we can’t secure enough funding to bring in a big name, not that we haven’t brought in big names (before).”
The type of act the theater can attract for the celebration is contingent upon funding from the city of Glasgow and the theater’s sponsorships, he said.
A committee has been developed to begin looking at what types of things the theater can offer the community as part of the celebration.
Mayor Darrell Pickett, who sits on the committee, said, “We’ll do whatever we can. We want to recognize the Plaza for its 75 years of existence in the community.”
No dollar figure has been discussed. Pickett pointed out that the city will be operating on its 2009-10 budget by July 1, and that city officials will be looking at the amount of money the city can contribute toward the event.
Joining Pickett on the committee is Barren County Judge-Executive Davie Greer.
“I think we need to have big name talent here for the celebration,” she said.
Who the theater is likely to schedule for the event has yet to be decided. Greer said the committee just needs to brainstorm for ideas.
In addition to the big name talent the theater is hoping to attract for the celebration, Jones said there will probably be a community-based event.
“We may try to do something with the local community theater group or the high school. They may want to get involved,” he said.
The committee is expected to begin meeting within the next few weeks to begin planning the celebration.
