Boil water advisory lifted for Cave City

CAVE CITY — Customers using Cave City Water Utility are no longer under a boil water advisory as of 10 a.m. Customers are still advised to conserve water.

All establishments operating under the Green River Valley Water District have been issued a closure notice and customers are still under a boil water advisory, according to David Peterson of the Caveland Environmental Authority.

Customers using Glasgow water are not under an advisory.

David Paige, general manager of Green River Valley Water District, was unavailable at press time because he was out assessing the situation.

Water can be treated in only a limited amount because the facility is operating under generator power.

Food safety is also an issue when the power goes out and the Barren River District Health Department has issued tips on how to handle food during the situation.

The district reported an unopened fridge can keep food cold for about four hours during an outage.

If it appears the power will be out for longer, pack refrigerated items into a cooler with ice.

A thermometer can also help tell if food is at a safe temperature. The refrigerator should be kept at 40 degrees F and the freezer at 0 degrees F.

The department also advises throwing out any perishable food in the fridge, such as meat, fish, dairy, eggs and any prepared or cooked foods because bacteria can multiply to unsafe levels under these conditions.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are safe as long as they are still firm and have no evidence of mold.

The health department also advises to be careful when using a wood fireplace or space heater.
