More than 41,000 without power after storms
LOUISVILLE — A state official says more than 41,000 homes and businesses remain without power in the wake of ice and wind storms that battered Kentucky.
Public Service Commission spokesman Andrew Melnykovych said 21,597 homes and businesses remained dark Friday morning from the deadly ice and snow storm that struck Kentucky starting Jan. 27. Melnykovych says another 20,049 utility customers were without power because of the wind storm that blew through on Wednesday.
The National Weather Service said it measured wind gusts of 62 miles per hour in Louisville on Wednesday.
The winds hit a little more than two weeks after an ice storm that is blamed for 36 deaths and more than 700,000 power outages at its peak, mostly in western Kentucky.
Coroner pleads guilty to prescription fraud
FRANKFORT — Attorney General Jack Conway says an eastern Kentucky coroner has pleaded guilty to seven counts of fraudulently obtaining a prescription for a controlled substance.
Conway said in a written statement that Letcher County Coroner John Cornett is required to resign from his position Friday as part of the plea agreement.
Cornett’s wife, Andrea, a former nurse at Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital, also pleaded guilty to four counts of theft of a controlled substance.
The Cornetts were indicted in November 2008 following an investigation by state police and the Office of the Attorney General’s Department of Criminal Investigations.
The statement says Cornett and his wife were sentenced to pre-trial diversion for three years.
As part of his plea deal, John Cornett also agreed not to seek the office of coroner for three years.
